This is accompanied by reflections, and a creative arts evening event at the Cathedral on Tuesday 24th March after Evensong. All are welcome, drinks and nibbles we be served. The evening will include an interview with the artist, a contemporary interpretive dance by Jake Roberts, music and poetry as well as a theological reflection by Canon Dr David Holgate.

PassionArt Trail 2016

BE STILL

PassionArt : BE STILL (2016) celebrates the ancient Christian festival of Lent through the mindful reflection of art in six of Manchester’s most iconic venues. Contemporary installations, paintings, sculpture and live performances by internationally renowned and local artists uncover moments where the sacred inhabits the ordinary. Seeking silence and stillness in a busy city is a spiritual exercise that all can explore, religious or secular. The art trail can be walked as a full days pilgrimage or each venue discovered as a single reflection in a lunch hour. Each art work in the trail is accompanied by a reflection and a praxis to help you engage spiritually and practically with stillness, prayer and mindfulness. Personal meditations from people of all walks of life around the theme of stillness and solitude can be found on our 40 days page, one for everyday of the season, to aid you in your Lenten journey.

The PassionArt Trail 2014
was one of our first major projects that encouraged renewed dialogue between the artist and the church, and to extend both the gallery and sacred space by creating opportunity for artist and public to engage in non-gallery locations to explore themes related to universal human experience and spiritual journey through the Easter Passion Story.
The trail took place across Manchester city centre during the 8 weeks of Lent 2014 hosted by 6 key city centre cultural and sacred venues. PassionArt Trail 2014 showed more than 60 art works by 20 artists inviting you to explore your own personal journey in relation to the Easter passion story reflecting on the universal themes of transformation, grief and loss, love and kindness and our longing for hope using traditional and contemporary art sited in gallery, museum and sacred spaces.

THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON
Join us for an evening of creative art, reflection and music at Manchester Cathedral on Friday 18th September at 7pm. International artist Ghislaine Howard, names Woman of the Year in 2008 for her contribution to art and society will talk about her inspiration and practice in relation to her life size painting of The Return of the Prodigal Son currently on display at the catehdral until 20th September 2015.

Using Ghislaine’s painting as a touchstone, her husband Michael Howard, a renowned art historian will explore the history and some of the key issues that are suggested by The Return of the Prodigal Son. These lively and animated talks will be interspersed by music from ‘Epiphany’ who will delight us with their own improvised interpretation to the art work as well as some classical performances.

This is a great opportunity to engage creatively with this important and well loved story.
Drinks will be served in the main knave from 6.30pm allowing for an opportunity to chat with the artist.

Ghislaine explains, “The idea of painting the Return of the Prodigal Son was an enormous challenge - how to recreate a subject already given such magisterial form by Rembrandt and the great Russian film director, Andrei Tarkovsky. It is a subject that is perhaps at the
very centre of everything I do; it goes straight to the heart of what it is to be human - our weaknesses and our strengths. It embodies the silence of the moment of forgiveness, reconciliation and redemption – in a word, compassion.”
